WordPress 3.0 ‘will be judged on its security performance’

The success of the latest version of the WordPress content management system will be judged upon the level of security it offers, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Guardian technology blog, Charles Arthur noted that WordPress 3.0 marks a significant point in the blogging platform’s evolution.

He noted that WordPress “does a terrific job in the main” of providing good security, but claimed that risks still remain.

“The fact that there are so many blogs out there using [WordPress hosting] means that vulnerabilities and exploits abound,” Mr Arthur stated.

“As it is open-source software, you have to take that as you find it – and there are plenty of things that can be done to harden it.”

Earlier this month, Paul Wallbank told Smart Company’s Business Tech Talk blog that the content management function offered by WordPress sets it apart from other blogging tools.

Over-charging driving test websites clean-up

Learner drivers are being fleeced by websites that will book your driving test at a huge mark-up.

The rogue sites confuse young drivers into thinking that they are dealing with the official site by appearing with an online search for the Driving Standards Agency or DSA.

We put “DSA driving test” into Google and the first site to come up was www.theorytest.net.

It charged £51 to book a theory test – an outrageous 69% mark-up on the official DSA price of £31.

The AA has heard from learner drivers who have also unwittingly booked practical tests through unofficial sites, paying an extra £30 on top of the standard fee of £62, or £75 for a weekend or evening test.

“These so-called services invite you to type in the same details you would if booking directly with the DSA, only on a different website and at a hugely inflated cost,” said Simon Douglas, director of AA Driving Schools.

“Some sites include ‘DSA’ in their Google search listings or web page headings, which can make it confusing as to whose site you’re on.

“Paying hiked-up fees for ‘help’ to book your test is a waste of money few learners and their parents can afford.”

The official website is www.dsa.gov.uk

If you feel you’ve been ripped-off by an unofficial site you might have trouble chasing a refund.

We tried to contact www.theorytest.net but the site gives no postal address, email address or phone number.

It was registered by Iomart Group PLC, which manages web-hosting for businesses.
We asked Iomart for contact details for theorytest.net but were told: “We cannot give out details about our customers.”

Rackspace Managed Web Hosting, Deploys New itzbig Hiring Technology

Rackspace Managed Hosting, will utilize the itzbig network, which offers technology companies and job candidates a private, interactive sourcing network, to assist in hiring procurement for new employees.

Bryan Powell, Director of Recruiting at Rackspace explained, ”itzbig is different in that it allows us to find high-performing employees who would otherwise not feel comfortable exploring jobs on the Internet. itzbig is attractive to these candidates because it offers privacy, security, and anonymity as well as the ability to see exactly how they match up against the specific job opportunity.”

According to the company, from the candidate’s side, itzbig is different than other available online recruiting services. itzbig’s networked approach gives prospective employees the ability to control their job search in that they determine what input they chose to provide for each respective position. If they’re unsure of what to emphasize in their profile, they can engage in an online dialogue with recruiters and hiring companies, who can provide more detailed feedback on the position.

Jim Hammock, CEO and Co-founder of itzbig remarked, ”More than 85 percent of today’s work force does not feel safe using Internet job sites. itzbig provides a secure environment making it OK for working professionals to look for alternative career opportunities. As a result employers have access to higher quality candidates. Users also benefit from a more accurate matching technology that saves precious time in connecting job seekers and employers. Early users like Rackspace are gaining immediate feedback regarding the availability of qualified candidates within minutes of entering open positions into the network.”
